Chiropractic manipulation is a stimulus to a specific vertebra and causes a sensory and motor response as well as affecting the sympathetic nervous system.
To put it more simply, it affects the nerves that give the spinal cord and brain the information (sensory) as well as the nerves that make our muscles and organs do what the brain and spinal cord tell them to (motor). The sympathetic nervous system controls the body’s hormonal response and the regulation of our internal organs, such as gut motility, pupil diameter and urinary output. The sympathetic nervous system is also involved in our “flight or fight” response to fear.
The sensory and motor affects from a chiropractic manipulation are:
- An increase in Range of motion of the joint with pain reduction
- Increased pain tolerance
- Reduced muscle tension
The Sympathetic effects from a chiropractic manipulation are:
- Increase in blood flow
- Reduction in blood pressure
- Changes in blood chemistry such as:
Ø Increased melatonin secretion (Melatonin is involved with regulating other hormones, its main function is to maintain the our sleep cycle ie: sleeping and waking times)
Ø Endorphin release which helps with pain management
Ø Immune boosting effects
Ø Energy enhancement
