Calling Mr Sandman

Sleeping position is something I discuss a lot with my patients. We spend a third of our 24hour day sleeping, thus it affects our back and neck as much as any other posture we assume throughout the day.
Most people want to know what the best sleeping position is. The main thing to consider when sleeping is to keep the spine in as perfect alignment as possible.
The two best sleeping positions are lying on your side or on your back with pillows strategically place to help your spine.
1.    Side Lying
When lying on your side the top leg will automatically drop off the bottom leg, causing the spine to be twisted, this can cause certain muscles to spasm up and further irritate any existing conditions. To avoid this from happening place a pillow between the knees, this will allow the legs to stay in one position and prevent any twisting of the lower back.
2.    Back lying
When lying on your back, this causes the lower back to arch more and places strain on certain joints. To avoid this from happening place some pillows under the knees, to flatten out the lower back and prevent any strain from occurring.
The worst case scenario?
The worst sleeping position is lying on your stomach, when lying on your stomach you are forced to turn your head to one side this places strain on certain joints and muscles in the upper back as well as the joints and muscles of the neck causing mechanical issues, pain and headaches.
So pile up on the pillows in the right places as they will help you sleep better and alleviate most muscle spasms and pain.

Twice a year is not enough!

Easter (and its related holidays) is now over and its back to work! Whilst driving around this weekend, I saw a very good yet disturbing sight - full church parking lots.

Before you jump to any conclusions, let me explain. I see this trend twice a year. Many people who do not go to church on a regular basis cram into the local church on two occasions a year, namely Easter and Christmas, for reasons that elude me and sometimes even them. Possible reasons are guilt, a sense of duty and so on.
Why only twice a year? I can understand the timing of the mass entrance to churches being the birth and death of Jesus Christ but what about the rest of the year? He came to save you ALL YEAR ROUND not just because you felt the need to go twice a year.

He is your best friend and Saviour and this is how you treat Him? How would you feel if your best friend (and Saviour) came to visit twice a year?

A cat will stretch to a distance proportional to the length of the nap just taken.

Stretching is a form of exercise in which a specific muscle or group of muscles are lengthened to increase the muscles elasticity, and help tone the muscle.  Stretching increases muscle control, flexibility and range of motion, as well as alleviating cramping.
Stretching can prevent injury and should be done before and after any aerobic exercise. This is known as warming up and cooling down periods.
Warming up allows your body and muscles to prepare for any activity, this helps keep your muscles supple, increases range of motion of the joints, enhances flexibility, improves coordination, increases body temperature and heart rate, which then increases blood flow to muscles which prevents cramping and injuries.
Cooling down after activity allows your muscles to ease off the tension from the exercise and gives your heart rate time to return to normal.
The correct way to stretch is slow and relaxed. Here are some tips:
  • Whilst stretching take deep breathes in, through your nose and out your mouth.
  • Holding your breath while stretching will only cause the muscle to spasm further.
  • Bouncing can actually cause you to pull the muscle that’s being stretched, so DO NOT BOUNCE when stretching EVER!
  • The stretch should go until there is mild tension, pain should never occur, if there is pain STOP!
  • Overstretching can cause damage so ensure that the muscle is in the correct position under mild tension.
Stretching is an instinctual behaviour, we automatically stretch after sleeping, or being in the same position for a long time, if we look at the animal kingdom all animals stretch upon waking.
Prevent injury during training by stretching; it can only improve your skills.

Who are the angels in your life?

My tertiary education started on a different path than the one I currently run along. It started as a year in sports massage with an aim to get into Chiropractic.

I believe that angels come along in many forms. One came into my life as a chiropractor who firstly picked up my suspected marfans syndrome during a 'routine appointment' and secondly may (or may not) have had a hand in my gaining entry into Chiropractic the following year.

Another angel entered my life whilst studying at Tech. When we first met - just friends, I was still in a relationship. It came about through us both failing a course. We wrote the exam and I went to get the results. By this time I was single again. I phoned her to tell her we both passed and asked her to mugg and bean for coffee. As the classics say - the rest is history. About 3 weeks it was official that we were together, about 3 years (March 2007) later we were engaged 24 November 2007 we were married.

Angels come in various forms. The trick is to recognize them and have them influence your life in a positive way. They sometimes stay in your life but not always.

Welcome Back Pat!!

Heroes come and go - Legends never die!

I first read about this guy in Runners World a few editions ago. An absolute amazing story of a man who came from a normal job to become possibly one of the greatest runners of his time.

That said - the article below highlights his next attempt at breaking records which to me is admirable and I support him all the way!

The problem with the article is actually the people who comment on it below the article! they go into the argument of whether or not he is the best runner whether his sponsors made him who he is! This is an absolute outrage in my books and they even compare him to club runners they know!! Despicable and an insult to Ryan!

Read it for yourself and make your own decision!

I am not a programmer at ALL but these quotes are hilarious and are actually describing many different facets of life! One such facet is auditing (that's my opinion)

Hero to ZERO!

I have recently written a blog post about the wonderful uplifting experience we had at ABSA in Durban. We have subsequently had fantastic service from them in paying up our vehicle finance and closing that account.

On the back of this great service and as we are looking to finance another vehicle, I phoned ABSA in order to start the process. I did recall the trial and suffering that we went through in order to finance our last car but was optimistic that this time would be different because of the above happening. Well I was suitably impressed with the initial part of the conversation until she had to find the car dealer that we are interested in using to get the car. She had to search for the dealer – no problem at all.
The problem came where the phone was hung up!! That was it – the phone call over! It was now after 6pm so the call centre is closed.

I stood there in absolute shock! Needless to say I am not so fond of ABSA currently to say the least!

Health day article: Benefits of a Chiropractic Manipulation

Chiropractic manipulation is a stimulus to a specific vertebra and causes a sensory and motor response as well as affecting the sympathetic nervous system.
To put it more simply, it affects the nerves that give the spinal cord and brain the information (sensory) as well as the nerves that make our muscles and organs do what the brain and spinal cord tell them to (motor). The sympathetic nervous system controls the body’s hormonal response and the regulation of our internal organs, such as gut motility, pupil diameter and urinary output. The sympathetic nervous system is also involved in our “flight or fight” response to fear.

The sensory and motor affects from a chiropractic manipulation are:

  • An increase in Range of motion of the joint with pain reduction
  • Increased pain tolerance
  • Reduced muscle tension

The Sympathetic effects from a chiropractic manipulation are:

  • Increase in blood flow
  • Reduction in blood pressure
  • Changes in blood chemistry such as:
Ø  Increased melatonin secretion (Melatonin is involved with regulating other hormones, its main function is to maintain the our sleep cycle ie: sleeping and waking times)
Ø  Endorphin release which helps with pain management
Ø  Immune boosting effects
Ø  Energy enhancement

Thus a manipulation can improve your overall functioning by giving you the necessary ‘happy hormones’, energy and immune boost and aid in regulating your sleeping patterns.

Answer:

Have fun!

Whatever you do, you should be having fun!

It is a big statement I know but it is true. You can argue that work is not fun whilst going on holiday is! But why cant you have fun at work? At least you should not be dreading going to work.

Moving off work being fun - your hobbies and spare time should be fun! I create websites in a business I run called Steggies Place Web Hosting. Go to www.steggiesplace.com for details. This is always fun! Yes it does create some extra income but that is certainly not the only fun I have! I have created websites for various people and they have always been and continue to be great fun when creating or maintaining them.

If you are enjoying the past times you are involved in - its contagious and others want to  know what you are doing to make you so happy and love life!
This concept was slammed into my head by Sir Richard Bransons book Let's Not Screw It, Let's Just Do It that I read recently. He made his money having fun! No if he can then you can!!

Have fun!

Are we addicted to work?

I ask the question for a few reasons:

  • When you not at work - what do you do? Was your answer nothing?
  • If you had unlimited income forever - would you still work? Did you answer yes? Addicted?
  • Do you receive your work email on your cell phone after hours and still answer them instead of spending time with your family / friends? Addicted.
  • When you are sitting around doing nothing or something - do you have the urge to go and work? I find i do this after my exams are finished - feel I should be studying.
Something to think about!

Chiropractic and Chiropractors explained.

This is a guest post by a Doctor of Chiropractic Dr Angela Pastilledes. Her details are also at the bottom of the post.
What is CHIROPRACTIC?
The word "chiropractic" combines the Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (action) and means "done by hand." Chiropractic is an alternative medical practice and has a different approach from medicine in diagnosing, classifying, and treating medical problems.
Chiropractors’ belief is that the main cause of pain and disease is the misalignment of the vertebrae in the spinal column.  This theory arises from the fact that the nerves exit the spinal cord and supply the muscles, ligaments and organs, thus misalignment of the spinal cord affects the functioning of all these structures. This misalignment is detected manually by palpation (feeling by hand) of the spine and joints.
Chiropractors use a hands-on therapy called manipulation (or adjustment) as their core clinical procedure. Manipulation passively moves the joint beyond the normal range of motion to restore optimum functioning of the joint, when this occurs sometimes a popping sound can be heard.
What is the noise I hear during an adjustment?
When your vertebrae are adjusted, tiny pockets of gas are released from the joints, making a "popping" noise.  Not all patients hear this noise. It's not a sign that the adjustment is working or not working.
What happens in a chiropractic treatment?
When going to the chiropractor they will ask what your complaint is, from there the chiropractor will assess your range of motion and orthopaedic, muscle and nerve evaluation will be done. Muscle treatment includes dry needling (if needed or wanted by patient) acupressure, soft tissue therapy over the affected area and manipulation. Advice on posture, ergonomics, sleeping position, appropriate stretching and rehabilitation may be given.
What types of conditions do chiropractors treat?

When a Chiropractic adjustment is administered proper movement is restored and a number of conditions are corrected via this manipulation:
·         Pain and stiffness
·         Headaches
·         Injuries/whiplash
·         TMJ (jaw problems)
·         Sports injuries
·         Bursitis and Tendonitis (conditions involving inflammation of soft tissues).
·         Fibromyalgia (chronic muscle pain and stiffness).
·         Scoliosis
·        Sciatica
·         Disc injuries/hernitions
·         Nerve disorders.
·         Hip impingement
·         Arthritis
·         Fatigue
·         Stress
·         Sinusitis
·         Sleeping difficulties
How do you know if you need a chiropractor?
Obviously if you have pain and stiffness or any joint and muscle conditions chiropractic would benefit you, however any healthy person at any given time will have segments of their spine which are ‘out of place’ , these segments send signals to your brain letting it know that they are not functioning properly.
Why not have a spinal screening and get your body working at is best.

College Admission Essay

This is an actual essay written by a college applicant. The author, Hugh Gallagher, was admitted to NYU.

Essay: In order for the admissions staff of our college to get to know you, the applicant, better, we ask that you answer the following question: Are there any significant experiences you have had, or accomplishments you have realized, that have helped to define you as a person?
I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas, I manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row.
I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.
Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I was scouted by the Mets, I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I'm bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.
I am an abstract artist, a concrete analyst, and a ruthless bookie. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy evening wear. I don't perspire. I am a private citizen, yet I receive fan mail. I have been caller number nine and have won the weekend passes. Last summer, I toured New Jersey with a traveling centrifugal-force demonstration. I bat .400. My deft floral arrangements have earned me fame in international botany circles. Children trust me.
I can hurl tennis rackets at small moving objects with deadly accuracy. I once read Paradise Lost, Moby Dick, and David Copperfield in one day and still had time to refurbish an entire dining room that evening. I know the exact location of every food item in the supermarket. I have performed several covert operations for the CIA. I sleep once a week; when I do sleep, I sleep in a chair. While on vacation in Canada, I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorists who had seized a small bakery. The laws of physics do not apply to me.
I balance, I weave, I dodge, I frolic, and my bills are all paid. On weekends, to let off steam, I participate in full-contact origami. Years ago, I discovered the meaning of life but forgot to write it down. I have made extraordinary four course meals using only a mouli and a toaster oven. I breed prizewinning clams. I have won bullfights in San Juan, cliff-diving competitions in Sri Lanka, and spelling bees at the Kremlin. I have played Hamlet, I have performed open-heart surgery, and I have spoken with Elvis.
But I have not yet gone to college.
